DCM (cardio)
Several years ago Dr. Muirs discovered a single genetic mutation identified in cases of DCM, this is known now as the DCM1.  Since then another mutation has been identified, known as DCM2.  There are well over 20 known mutations identified in human medicine, and so we are still far from discovering a solid genetic means to completely rid our breed of this disease.

When a breeder lists their dog as being DCM negative, this is only referring to Dr. Muirs gene testing (DCM1&2 genes), it does not conclude in anyway that this dog will or will not develop DCM, or produce offspring with it.

Cardio testing by way of Holtering and/or Doppler, combined with selective breeding, is still the best device to determine suitable pairing to reduce the risk of cardio.
After many conversations with folks looking to acquire a Dobermann as a family companion, it has been clear that there is still much confusion over vWd.

We are fortunate to have a definitive DNA test to identify if our Dobies are clear, carrier, or affected with the vWd mutation.  If affected, this mutation can cause clinical bleeding and require special attention, and added costs, when performing extensive surgeries.

I wish to clear up a few misconceptions regarding vWd.

If a dog is vWd clear, it is impossible for him/her to pass the mutation onto their offspring.  When a vWd DNA clear is bred to a carrier or an affected, the offspring will be carrier or clear, none of those offspring will be affected. 

A carrier is not at risk at all of clinical bleeding due to vWd. 

It is not wrong for a breeder to breed a carrier, however that carrier should be bred to a clear to responsibly ensure that none of the offspring will be affected.

An affected Dobermann is not guaranteed to have a bleed-out and could very well make it through life without ever having an incident.  However they could, and some do, and nobody can tell you what the risk factor would be exactly.

- A clear cannot produce affected pups.
- A carrier will produce affected pups if bred to
  another carrier or affected.
- An affected will produce affected offspring unless bred with a clear.

Generally one can rest easy that they will not get an affected puppy if one of the parents to their considered litter is a DNA clear.
